It is one of the southernmost and most remote countries in the world, surrounded by thousands of kilometers of sea.
It was also one of the last lands to be settled by humans and has developed a rich and unique biodiversity of flora and fauna.
These islands have been predominantly shaped by volcanic activity, due to their location on the Pacific Ring of Fire.
The North Island’s active volcanic zones have experienced many large explosive eruptions over the past two million years, including supervolcanic events.
